Under the direction of the VP Controller, the Senior Financial Accountant will prepare regulatory reports, SEC filings and/or management reports for the Finance Department, ensuring that they are completed accurately and timely. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to, general ledger reconciliations and month-end closing.
Prepare various internal and external reporting requirements, including, but not limited to SEC, FDIC Call report and Federal Reserve reporting. Also includes ad-hoc reporting.
Responsible for accurately accounting for specialized accounting topics, such as derivatives, mortgage servicing rights valuation, taxes or allowance for loan loss. Responsible for completing detailed or complex analyses to support critical estimates at period-end.
Responsible for writing and maintaining reports in general ledger system and other reporting applications. Responsible for implementing any GL chart changes and ensuring all related reports are appropriately updated. Fully understand the general ledger system, related modules and other reporting applications, continually review processes for improvements.
Participate in month-end close, with responsibilities including but not limited to review of key reconciliations, preparing accrual estimates, analyses and eliminations/consolidations. Ensure adequacy of accrual balances, make adjustments as needed. Provide analysis to management, as needed to assist with month-end close or budgeting.
Review and approve reconciliations, ensuring compliance with the Account Reconciliation policy. May be responsible for certain high-level or complex reconciliations as needed. Recommend process improvements to business line partners.
Ensure financial statements and general ledgers comply with GAAP and corporate accounting policies. After reviewing alternative approaches, recommend compliant accounting and reporting procedures. Design and implement reports (including supporting work papers and related controls) for new or modified financial statements required by GAAP and bank regulatory agencies and prepared for senior management, the board of directors and regulators.
Responsible for accurate procedures for all items the senior financial accountant is responsible. Cross-train colleagues as needed, ensure procedures are kept current.
Responsible for adherence to the bank’s FDICIA and internal controls.
Perform all duties professionally and within the bank's quality service standards ensuring confidentiality of information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
COMPLIANCE: Maintain an excellent understanding of applicable regulations and laws, including but not limited to; Bank Secrecy Act; and Privacy. Maintain an up to date understanding of bank policies and procedures as they relate to compliance.
Responsible for staying current with GAAP and understanding applicable pronouncements.
Complete appropriate compliance training.
Education and/or Experience
BA in Business Administration, Finance/Accounting and a minimum of three to five years of recent experience within the accounting/finance department of a financial institution. SEC reporting and regulatory reporting is preferred. CPA or MBA is not required, but is a plus.
Excellent organization skills with the ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively. Can monitor own work to ensure thoroughness and attention to detail.
Ability to prepare reports objectively, concisely and clearly and describe the work performed to enhance the report’s usefulness.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to use judgment, make sound decisions and work independently.
Maintain an excellent understanding of all reporting applications used by the bank and ability to learn new application as needed. Experience with Oracle Financials, Merrill Bridge, FedReporter SmartCall applications is a plus. Have excellent Microsoft Excel skills and confident with the rest of the Microsoft Office Suite.
Proven track record of excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Excellent understanding of accounting concepts.
